Bourke Street Public School (BSPS) is an inner city school established in 1880 and located in heritage classified buildings. The school caters for the needs of children from a diverse multicultural community and provides quality education in a safe and happy school environment. Student welfare is an im portant school priority and the school has a highly effective discipline policy. There is also a strong emphasis on assisting students to acquire competency in literacy, numeracy,computing skills and the creative and performing arts.

BSPS is well-equipped to teach these skills. School resources are supplemented by funding from participation in the Priority Schools Program. Primary learning includes whole-class, group and individual activities designed to develop an inquiring mind and teach basic learning skills needed for schooling and later life.

Literacy and numeracy are the building blocks of learning and that is why English and mathematics take up half of students' learning time in primary school.

Kindergarten to Year 6 focuses on six key learning areas:

human society and its enviro nment

perso nal development, health and physical education

creative arts

Primary school in NSW follows a curriculum ba sed on stages of learning. Each stage is approximately equivalent to two school years. For each learning stage there are skills, knowledge and a level of understanding that each student should develop.

Bourke Street Public School has access to two service providers:

1) The Surry Hills Neighbourhood Centre (SHNC) operates the After School Care Service at Bourke Street Public School.

The service is available Mo nday to Friday from 3pm to 6pm.

2) The Girl's and Boy's Brigade operates the After School Care Service from their facility at 409 Riley Street Surry Hills.

The service is available Mo nday to Friday from 3pm to 6pm. Each afternoon their staff escort the children from Bourke Street Public School to their facility on Riley Street.
