What are the categories? 类别
Students may submit writing that falls into one of several categories that the award offers. These categories are: Critical Essay, Personal Essay & Memoir, Flash Fiction, Novel Writing, Dramatic script, Poetry, Humor, Journalism, Science Fiction & Fantasy, and Short Story. Depending on the student’s chosen genre, exact requirements regarding word count will vary. Regardless of category, the primary metrics of success the judges will pay attention to are originality, skill, and the emergence of a personal vision or voice.
Preparation
A student’s preparation will vary greatly on the type of writing they are interested in submitting. In general, some core tenets of preparation will be vital. The mock syllabus below outlines the key areas in which preparation courses would help to prepare a student’s writing for submission to this or other potential competitions.
Grammar Writing
Class 1+2: Grammar and Writing Strategies
Studying grammar to ensure that the student submits a paper free of any errors will be crucial to ensuring their work is placed among the best submissions. As such, an initial class or two (depending on grade and English level) will be of paramount importance to ensuring that the structure of their writing is strong.
Analyze分析
Class 3+4: How to Analyze Written Work 第3+4课:如何分析写作作品
For a student to be able to create a compelling piece of work of their own, some classes will focus on how to read other written works and identify things like theme, authorial intent, and literary devices like personification, metaphor, simile, and more. We will also look at prose and discuss how our aesthetic judgments factor into our appreciation of writing.
an Idea主题
Class 5+6: Creating an Idea
Next, class will be dedicated to coming up with a good idea for a piece of work regardless of genre. Topics include how to analyze theme, how to create compelling themes of one’s own, and how to structure both an argument (in the case of formal writing) or a narrative (for creative writing).
The Workbench
Class 6+7: The Workbench From a Writer’s Perspective
Depending on the type of writing the student wishes to undertake, these classes will be tailored to analyzing that particular form of written work, with particular attention paid to craft. That is, we will analyze work from the perspective of a writer rather than a reader so that we can see the methods and tools that a writer uses to create compelling works.
Workshop Editing
Class 8+9+10: Workshop Editing
As the deadline draws closer we will focus specifically on the work that the student has produced, critiquing and rereading it to correct potential flaws and ensure that the student’s intention is showing clearly in their work.
